History of the NSCCP

History
The Charity was officially launched in February 2002 by the Mayor of Elmbridge, Councillor Wyn Heaseman.

However, our history goes back to 1998 during a research project that was being undertaken by a group of trainee counsellors at Brooklands College in Weybridge. Research showed that at any one time, one in six adults experience a mental health problem – more than will suffer from cancer or heart disease – and many of these suffer from more common problems such as anxiety or depression yet there were no low cost counselling facilities within the whole of the North Surrey Area.

As many of the trainees were looking for placements the idea of meeting two needs; those needing counselling and those needing counselling hours to qualify for their professional development, was born. Once qualified, three of the counsellors decided to take the idea further by calling a public meeting to draw attention to the statistics. From this meeting a steering group was formed that included health professionals, local business and local clergy.

The original steering group obtained charitable status in 1999, and the group members became the first Trustees of the new Charity. Further work followed to develop the policies and procedures to run the new organisation. In 2001a grant from the National Association of Hospital and Community of Friends enabled us to appoint our first Co-ordinator and Administrator, and St Peter’s Church in Hersham offered us an office from which to operate.

In 2002 the Charity recruited its first four volunteer counsellors. We now have 20 volunteer counsellors and receive over 40 referrals a month from health professionals and from individuals who self-refer for counselling.

Who we can work with
At the NSCCP our remit is to work with clients who are in short-term psychological crisis. In real terms this means that we assess the client has problems that can be addressed within a year. Those experiencing more severe difficulties are encouraged to contact more suitable agencies. Each client is asked to pay what they can afford and no one is turned away for financial reasons.
Our Counsellors
All of our volunteer counsellors are carefully selected after a lengthy interview process. All volunteers are on accredited training courses and are close to becoming fully qualified counsellors. During their time with us they are under the supervision of our qualified counsellors. We also organise regular training sessions on specific topics of interest to support continuing professional development.

Our volunteer counsellors usually go on to become accredited members of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, which is the recognized umbrella body for counselling in this country.

Benefits of our service
Clients who fill in an evaluation form at the end of counselling feel they have benefited from the service by:
  1. Gaining greater understanding of their issues
  2. Feeling empowered
  3. Improved communication skills
  4. Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
  5. Increased independence
  6. Finding employment
  7. Depression and anxiety symptoms alleviated

Recently the Charity organised three ‘group’ counselling sessions. These sessions were funded by the European Union Global Grant award. Those taking part who were unemployed found that they were able to identify the specific help and support they needed to ease them back into paid work or training. Clients who were employed but were struggling with stress related issues found that they better understood their difficulties and to a large extend appeared to overcome them during these sessions.

The Charity hopes to be able to attract future funding to continue with this development of the service.

Geograhpical Operating Area
Currently the Charity operates in an area encompassing Elmbridge, Runnymede and part of Spelthorne We are the only low cost short term counselling service (voluntary sector or otherwise) within this area. The Charity concentrates in particular in areas that are recognised areas of deprivation within one of the richest counties in the UK. This includes the electoral wards of Hersham, North Walton, Molesey South, and Lower Green in Esher.
Trustees
The work of the NSCCP is overseen by a group of elected Trustees, many of whom were founder members of the Charity. Currently our Trustees include people with business, counselling, health service and faith backgrounds. All recognise the valuable contribution that the Charity makes to the health of the local community. Any one who would like to consider becoming a Trustee should go to the Trustee section of this site.
